Therapy with a real person, not a robot.

An eclectic approach.

Hey there! I’m Shantell (she/her).

I’m the owner of Shine Mental Health and a licensed therapist.

Firstly, the most important thing to know about me and how I practice is I believe there’s no one-size-fits all approach to therapy. I believe that a large part of my expertise is knowing when something isn’t working, moreso than when something is.

It’s important to me that you (and/or your child) feels centered and valued as an equal in this mental health partnership.

While we get to know each other, I will be informally assessing cognitive, relational, and somatic aspects.

  • Cognitive refers to thought patterns, internal messages, and associated feelings.

  • Relational refers to the people, communities, and organizations in your life including: romantic and sexual partners, parenting, friends, family life, co-workers, and poly/CNM dynamics.

  • Somatic refers to your body and feelings. What is your body telling you?

Trained as a complex trauma practitioner, I am always striving to move through our work with trauma and its impacts in mind.

I’m trained in:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

  • Poly-Vagal Applications + Stress Cycle Management

  • Inner Child Work

  • Somatic Processing

  • Internal Family Systems

  • Critical Incident Desensitization (CID)

I’ve been on the other side of this decision making process - I know finding a therapist is hard! Trusting someone is even harder. While the therapeutic emphasis will always be on you and your experience, I also believe in the power of occasional self disclosure.

Here are a few facts about me to inform your personal decision making process:

  • As an adult child of an alcoholic, I have both personal and professional experience sitting alongside fellow travelers of the ACA/ACOA 12 step programs. This is an important part of my own healing.

  • Queer is an expansive identifier I use for myself. I have first hand experience of walking through the journey accepting my identity. I’ve helped dozens of clients do the same!

  • I graduated from Vanderbilt with my Masters degree in 2017. I also teach for Vandy as an adjunct professor in the Human Development Counseling program.

  • Rest and leisure are important to me! When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time walking outside or in the aisles of Target, reading, and relaxing with my partner, daughter, and our grumpy cat, Hickory.
